LEEMING BAR
HISTORY
Visitors are curious to know the meaning of the word ‘Bar’ in the village’s name. Back in the days when the Great North Road was a toll road, travellers using it were required to pay at the `bar’ or `gate’ (toll) in order to continue their journey. The original Toll house from the days of the Great North Road remains in situ, opposite Leeming Bar railway station and is now a private house. The Great North Road ceased to be the main trunk road in 1961 when the new A1 dual carriageway was built half a mile to the west. The A1 was upgraded again, in 2016, to a three-lane motorway with the former dual carriageway now a service road, running alongside the new A1(M) motorway.
A lovely old cast iron milepost opposite The Roost is a reminder of the Great North Road and marks the distance for two main ports of call on the former route. This milepost was one of many made at the Mattison Iron Foundry in the village (now John H Gill’s). Many of these characteristic objects can still be seen beside various roadsides around North Yorkshire and a large number have been beautifully restored by The Milestone Society.
ACCOMMODATION AT
The Roost Retreat
Our comfortable and quiet little holiday annexe is set back off the road and made up of two separate, quirky and cosy areas. The primary room at The Roost Retreat, a former farm outbuilding, retains the original wooden beam and is dotted with a Poultry theme throughout as a nod towards the buildings’ previous role as a working farm. Whilst The Roost is annexed to the main property, it has complete independence and privacy including full use of the front area parking and fully enclosed garden, which is secure and safe for those with dogs.
Going through the French style doors into the main accommodation, you are met with a luxurious four poster, king-size bed, with two comfy tub chairs. The bedroom has a little `Butler’s Kitchen’ enabling that morning coffee, afternoon tea or late night hot chocolate without leaving the room! The hospitality tray boasts a range of Ringtons specialist teas, hot chocolate and biscuits and a mini-fridge under the counter with fresh milk on arrival.
There is a compact en-suite shower room with a generous-size shower cubicle, in-situ rain shower and a smaller detachable shower head. You will find bathrobes, towels, bath mat and Scottish Fine Soap toiletries and hand soap
The Roost Retreat is fully double glazed throughout and has blackout curtains in the bedroom/living area. There is a lovely aspect across to the well-stocked front garden and the park beyond with its mature trees and wild birds. Guests have access to their own exclusive outdoor area with a table, seating and parasol, a charcoal fired barbeque and private side gate entrance.
The property has a hard-wired smoke alarm, carbon monoxide detector, fire extinguisher and fire blanket in the kitchenette.

SEPARATE KITCHENETTE AND
Dining Area
Our cute little kitchenette is a separate outside room, a step away from the main accommodation and also doubles up as a cosy and peaceful dining area. There is a table with two chairs and a curtain which can be drawn across to cosy up in the evenings with a meal and glass of wine. A battery operated candle creates the perfect relaxing and romantic atmosphere! We provide a tea towel, hand towel, and washing up liquid. This compact little space is well-equipped with a range of cooking utensils and has the following:
Kettle
Toaster
Krups Coffee machine and biodegradable pods
Electric wall heater
Air fryer, portable single hot plate and a microwave with grill – (please note: we do not have an oven, cooker hob or dishwasher)
