THE ROOST RETREAT
Local History
Many people are curious to know the meaning behind the word ‘Bar‘ in the village’s name. Back in the days when the Great North Road was a toll road, travellers using it were required to pay at the `bar’ or `gate’ (toll) in order to continue their journey. The original Toll house from the days of the original A1 remains in situ, opposite Leeming Bar railway station and is now a private house.
An old cast iron milepost, opposite The Roost, remains as a reminder of the old Great North Road days and marks the distance for two main ports of call on the old route. This milepost was one of many made at the Mattison Iron Foundry, many remain beside various roadsides around North Yorkshire and a large number have been beautifully restored.
ACCOMMODATION AT
The Roost Retreat
Our comfortable and quiet little holiday retreat is set back off the road and made up of two separate, quirky and cosy areas. The primary room at The Roost Retreat (the former Orangery) retains the original characteristic wooden beams and is dotted with a Poultry theme throughout as a nod towards the buildings’ previous role as a working farm.
Going through the French style doors into the main accommodation, you are met with a luxurious king-size four poster bed, with a seating area and two comfy tub chairs. There is an en-suite shower room with a generous-size shower cubicle and rain shower. You will find a full hospitality tray with a range of Ringtons teas, coffee, hot chocolate, mini marshmallows and biscuits. A Welcome hamper which includes our own homemade preserves is provided for guests staying three or more nights.
The Roost Retreat is fully double glazed throughout and has blackout curtains in the bedroom/living area. There are lovely views across to the well-stocked front garden and the park beyond with its mature trees. Guests have access to their own exclusive patio area with seating and parasol, barbeque, private side gate entrance and a fire pit is available on request.
The property has a hard-wired smoke alarm, carbon monoxide detector, fire extinguisher and fire blanket in the kitchenette.

SEPARATE KITCHENETTE AND
Dining Area
Our cute little kitchenette is a separate outside room, a step away from main accommodation and also doubles up as a dining area. It is well-equipped with a table and chairs, electric wall heater, air fryer, portable single hot plate, mini-fridge and a range of cooking utensils. There is a curtain which can be drawn across to cosy up in the evenings with a meal and glass of wine, creating a quiet, relaxing and romantic atmosphere.
ACCESSIBLE
Accommodation
The Roost Retreat has level, secure on-site parking on a tarmac surface with a turning space. The accommodation is all ground floor level, with double door access, with no stairs anywhere in the property and is suitable for those with walking/mobility difficulties.
For your furry family member(s); we have dog bags and a specific doggie bin for their waste. Your dog(s) are welcome to run around our garden to exercise and play with a ball, but we ask that they are kept under control and to pick up any deposited `number twos’!
